The album had been written and recorded with Joe Lynn Turner, but Deep Purple members (Roger Glover, Ian Paice and Jon Lord) were not happy with Joe continuing to sing for the band. So both the band and the record label (RCA) asked Ritchie Blackmore to kick out Joe Lynn Turner and bring back Ian Gillan.
According to Joe Lynn Turner in an interview, the songs on this album were going to be composed with the help of Jim Peterik (Survivor), with the aim of making songs more commercial and playing more on the radio (in the style of Desmond Child with Aerosmith, Kiss and Bon Jovi), but Ian Paice and Jon Lord were not at all in agreement with this commercial attitude that they were having.
"Time to Kill" was called "Lonely for You" it was composed and recorded by Joe Lynn Turner for this album.
"One Man's Meat" was called "Stroke of Tomorrow" and was composed by Joe Lynn Turner and Jim Peterik between the era of the "Slaves and Masters" and "The Battle Rages On" albums. Joe Lynn Turner would record his version of this song on his album "Second Hand Life" (2007).
